Well the first race of the season is over with and behind me now and went relatively well; all of the training in the off season and physical therapy on my knee paid off. Round 1 of the NorCal Supermoto Series took place in Fernley, Nevada. The temps were perfect for racing (70’s) and my bike ran great. The track had an extremely long straight (in the mid 80mph range) and one of the best dirt sections we have seen at club level racing. The dirt included a large table, a double step up jump, then a rhythm section that went triple-double-double followed by a kicker, all ran in between some silty corners and finally dumped out onto the straight away. After eating my pre-race meal went out and ran some practice, I was feeling strong and anxious to race. In the 400cc heat race I was 4th off the line and in the first corner passed a couple guys putting me into second, ran the remainder of the lap pacing the first place rider. In the dirt section I decided to make a move on the first place rider and over shot a jump, ended up going over the handle bars face first into the dirt. Got back up and hopped on the bike in last place and finished the race after catching and passing a few of the people in the back of the pack. When I got off the track my right thumb started to swell and hurt. Medic thought it was broken so he taped it up for me and sent me on my way. In the mains I had last row starts due to crashing in the 400cc heat race and missing 250 pro heat race; so I knew I had my work cut out for me. I got a good start in the 250 pro main and was battling for 6th position when I started to loose circulation on my right hand from the tape the medics put on, unfortunately this led to me not being able to get a good feel on the brake and laying the bike down in the dirt section; I got back up and finished a respectable 9th. In the 400cc race I got a great start and passed 3 rows of riders and then went into the first corner hot and when I came out of it was running 4th, I battled with the 3rd place rider for the entire race but his bike had quite a bit more power than me so every time I would get a wheel on him he would just out throttle me. I ended up finishing 4th which isn’t where I wanted to be, but considering the circumstances (fractured thumb and last row start) I was satisfied with the results. I am now taking it easy on the thumb, and trying not to ride and have been preparing my bike for the Stateline Supermoto Race in Primm Nevada. I would like to thank all my sponsors for helping me out this season and will keep everyone posted on how Stateline goes!

Here’s a little write up from the race that was on the SuperMoto Racer Magazine website…
“Thompson and Camera, who finished third and fifth in the 250-F moved up to take first and second in the 400 Amateur. Thompson checked out early, leaving Camera midway in a long gap between leader Thompson and the contestants for third place, Brandon Sakai and Jimmy Gonzalez. The battle for third place was the item to watch in this race. Gonzalez was all over Sakai's back end for much of the time, but to no avail. On the last lap and in the dirt section (where often the best action is found) Gonzalez mounted a last-ditch charge and it looked like he might just edge out Sakai. Not this time, though, maybe next time.”

I just got home from Long Beach. It was a interesting race and a great experience. The track was amazing and being able to compete on the same track that prestigious riders such as Ward, Henry and Metzger ride on is a reward in itself. I raced the lights class and ended up finishing a respectable 18th, had my sole not been falling off my boot during the main and my shoulder wasn't soar from a crash in practice on Fri I feel I would have done better. Race season is now over so I can start training for next season and recuperate and wait for all my replies for sponsorships to come back!

The SuperMoto USA season is now over, in the last race I managed to pull off a podium and win my class championship. I am very excited about this and am looking forward to Long Beach in a couple weeks. Say hello to the new NorCal Champ!

Just to get ya up to speed, I have managed to pull off podium finishes in the first six rounds in the season. Some crashes and horsepower disadvantages have plagued me in rounds 7 and 8. With one race left in the SupermotoUSA NorCal Championship that is double the points, and a current commanding lead; I am confident that I will be able to pull off the number 1 plate this season. I am currently training extremely hard, riding MX and SM at least twice a week, also riding my mountain bike in between and eating healthier. I am stoked for this last race and cant wait for Nasmoto in Long Beach! |
